Convention has been held the first weekend in November since the Organization was chartered in 1987. The following is a list of the hosting clubs and cities.
Our History In 1985, a group of mothers met in Charlotte for the first time. Their purpose was to investigate the possibility of forming a state organization of mothers of Twins Club. The National/State Liaison for the National Organization of Mothers of Twins Club, Inc., organized and chaired the meeting. Various information was shared as mothers met and discussed their local clubs, shared in workshops, ideas on organizing, fund raising, publicity and newsletters. Through this first meeting the idea was formed that yes, mothers of twins and multiples in North Carolina did want a State Organization, and yes, they could make it happen.
A follow up organizational meeting was held in Raleigh in 1986. A tremendous amount of work was accomplished, and this group was well on its way to becoming a real organization.
In 1987, in Hickory, NC, the NORTH CAROLINA MOTHERS OF MULTIPLES organization was chartered, accepting its first Constitution, bylaws, and electing its first slate of officers. An outline was set and adopted for dues to be paid. Other important positions were filled, and a state newsletter was planned. Our NC MOMs organization was truly born.
In 1988, Governor Martin proclaimed that the first Saturday in November, MOTHERS OF MULTIPLES DAY, as delegates from across our state convened in Winston-Salem. More progress was made, more friendships were formed, others strengthened, more information was shared. Many goals of the North Carolina Mothers of Multiples has been met, and more goals were being set.
The 1989 NC MOMs Convention was held in Wilmington, home of two-term President, Joyce Piner. The President’s reins were passed from Joyce to Jan Folsom, and so the journey continued.
In 1990, five years after its humble beginnings, NORTH CAROLINA MOTHERS OF MULTIPLES returns to the Queen City for its Third Annual Convention. NC Moms proudly welcomes Jean Ann Keating, newly elected President of the National Organization, as its Installing Officer for 1990. The only limits our State Organization will ever see will be the ones it sets upon itself. The wealth of information and support that can be reaped by every one who takes part in this community of mothers can only stand to help us all to improve our local clubs, and improve our services to all mothers of twins and multiples. Let’s keep marching forward—TOGETHER.
